A group of Maine-Endwell students working on property donated by Progressive Dental will help feed the hungry later this year. Kids from Homer Brink Elementary School planted their Spartan Garden, this afternoon. The third through fifth graders started growing the tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, broccoli, lettuce and peppers in their classrooms earlier this year. Today, they planted them in the ground. Much of the food will be given out by the district to families in need, especially on weekends and over the holidays during the school year, when students don’t have access to breakfast and lunch at school. Some of the produce will be sold to help support the gardening program for next year.

Fourth grader Emily Blight says the project has been fun.”I like it a lot. I think it’s really good for our community. Right now, we’re just planting plants and digging little holes around them to make sure that this week the water comes in and gets them very good,” said Blight.

Taylor Norton says, “There is a science part of it where they’re taking care of a living thing and seeing what it needs to stay alive, but then on the other hand they’re already doing civics where they’re taking care of a need in the community,” said third grade teacher Taylor Norton.

Students, teachers and parents will help take care of the garden during the summer when school isn’t in session.
