First Aid for Cuts or Bites on the Tongue, Lip, or Cheek

Immediate Care and When to Seek Help

If the injury causes bruising, apply ice wrapped in a clean cloth or use an ice pack to the affected area. This can help numb the area and reduce swelling. Apply the ice in 15-20 minute intervals to avoid frostbite and further damage to the tissue.

For bleeding, gently apply firm pressure to the area using sterile gauze or a clean cloth. Press directly on the wound and hold the pressure for 10 to 15 minutes without lifting it to check the wound, as this could disrupt the clotting process. If bleeding does not stop or continues beyond 15 minutes, it’s critical to seek immediate medical attention at the emergency room. Severe or prolonged bleeding from the mouth or surrounding areas may require professional care to control the bleeding and assess the extent of the injury.
